Take a Walk in a High Schooler’s Shoes – by Kayla Pinard

“Your soul is always going to whisper your truth back to you. Your soul wants what’s best for you. And if you try to silence its voice, eventually the whisper will become a roar.”

50,000-70,000 thoughts per day go through each human’s mind. Imagine what it’s like to have most of those thoughts be physically, emotionally, and mentally draining. Imagine a suicidal teenager thinking of ways to take her or his own life, not knowing there’s a better way out. Imagine what a 16 year old girl getting ready for school and picking out clothes that cover the bruises on her arm is thinking. Imagine the thoughts going through a teenagers head who has severe anxiety, what if all my friends hate me and they’re just my friends out of pity, fearing everything they know isn’t real. Nobody is constantly going to be there by their sides telling them it’s okay. The person they need the most is themselves. Everything they need in life is already in them and they just need to find it. A self love class can help them spark the fire in them to prosper. There is so much that goes on in teenagers minds from the moment they wake up till the moment they fall asleep. A negative mind will harm them in more ways than one. If a self love class was taught they could rise above these struggles like anxiety and depression, low self esteem, and toxic environments.

Anxiety and depression go hand in hand.  A lot of mental disorders can cause anxiety and depression. Although, a lot of people struggle with just anxiety and depression. Depression can be caused by traumatic events or it can be clinical. Anxiety is the same way.

Everybody struggles with anxiety at least a couple times in life. It’s a natural body defense mechanism in dangerous situations. It becomes a significant problem when a person is in a constant state of being anxious, affecting their daily lives. Anxiety is the most common mental illness, but fortunately very treatable. 1 in 5 American teens suffer from anxiety and 80% are not getting the help they need. Anxiety takes a toll on the mind if it isn’t treated. Anxiety is a soul’s roar. Their anxiety could lead them into depression.

Depression isn’t only sadness. Depression hides behind a fake smile for most. Depression is not being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Depression is feeling like a prisoner to the mind. Depression is not getting out of bed all day. Depression is irritability. Depression gets annoyed at the sight of happiness. Depression is loneliness. Depression is a dark cloud that fogs up someone’s mind feeling like there’s no hope and no one to love them. Depression is having all of these feelings at once at some point, they’ll become emotionally numb. Depression isolates a person.  Depression is a soul’s roar.

Even if a student isn’t going through a mental illness like depression or anxiety, they’re still going through other life struggles like relationship and friendship drama and possibly problems at home. During high school there’s a lot of gains and pains. Also some students during the high school ages want to “rebel” against their parents and others in an authoritative positions. Teenagers want their voices heard. They could start using drugs, drinking underage, having unprotected sex, and partying to get their voices heard. The soul’s whisper is warning the person what danger they could be in from this.

At this age, students are just about finding who they are. Instead of having physical “growing pains,” they have what I call “emotional growing pains.” Teenagers are very impressionable from their friends instead of before when it was their guardians or teachers.

Life is hard for teenagers. Yes, it’s not “real world adult problems,” but, growing up problems are detrimental to go through too. It will what make them wise and have a good head on their shoulder as adults. Imagine if a student took a self love course and those 50,000-70,000 thoughts turn into hey, I feel great today. Imagine if that roar turned back into a whisper and never turned back again because that person would be listening and not silencing the soul’s voice.
