The Golden Era of TV Shows: by TuAnh Duong

Let’s face it, TV shows from the late 80’s to the 90’s were the golden era for us growing up. Wouldn’t you agree? Now yes the majority of us weren’t born in that time period but it was still on the air with new episodes coming out when we were growing up or we were basically watching reruns of it. You had Rugrats, SpongeBob, Hey Arnold, and more! If you were older you might even remember Full House, The Nanny, Family Matters, Saved by the Bell, and Roseanne. Alright, now let’s look at what’s on TV today. Boring, blah, blah, and blah. TV shows in the recent age have lost their prestige. Slowly it seems though that the big channel corporations have received this message and they’re turning out shows that we’re finally liking. In recent times they have started doing continuations of the original shows that we watched when we younger. Full House, for instance, is now Fuller House! It’s on Netflix and has been a smash hit for them. Just recently they were renewed for a fourth season. Roseanne is another TV show that some of us grew up watching. It was originally aired on ABC from October 18, 1988, to May 20, 1997. Many years would pass before ABC would announce that they would be picking up the series once again to the thrills of many fans. Their only season, season 10, essentially picked up where they last left off. It was short lived however as Roseanne said a racist remark over on Twitter about Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to Barack Obama, on May 29, 2018. ABC quickly stepped in and canceled the remaining episodes, if there were any left in the season. Only nine episodes got to be seen before it was quickly died off. Did Roseanne deserve this? Absolutely, freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequence. However, did the rest of the cast deserve it? No, they did not. I do hope that they will find some success later down on the road. The cancellation of Roseanne from ABC does make sense though as the company is owned by Disney and they want to be family friendly. It was only a matter of time before Roseanne would say something such like that and a consequence would not be far away from hitting her swiftly.
